If you want to donate cash to a good cause, but don't know where to make your gift, try Charity Navigator, your guide to intelligent giving. I just spent some time on their site and got some good ideas. They have reviewed and rated over 5,000 charities. I like this list of 4-star charities.

i have used Charity Navigator in the past but got out of the habit for a while, just started using it again. it is very helpful and informative. i discovered that a number of the charities i get appeals for donations from in the mail have less-than-encouraging ratings...sad, but it makes it easier to choose who i want to donate to. i definitely recommend it.
