I've shared with you all that the manuscript for the 29 Gifts book has been delivered to the desk of the editor for the final (I hope) time. That means we have a fairly solid idea of which of the submitted essays have been chosen by the publisher for inclusion. We're still in the production phase, so things could still change, but we're comfortable enough with where we stand to announce which stories are planned to be published in 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life.
I have learned a lot through the writing and editing processes, the biggest of which was probably that I had no idea what I was getting into. I saw my story as a very small portion of the finished product, which would be supplemented by 29 stories shared by members of our community. The publishers saw things a bit differently! In the end, after the editors and publishers exerted their advice and input, my story was considerably longer than I'd ever planned, and there was only room for nine of the essays you all submitted.
I want to assure you that we ABSOLUTELY intend to have publish at least one follow-up book of personal essays in the future, and we are keeping all submissions on file for possible inclusion in the follow up editions. If you sent us a story, it will be considered for our next book, you will not have to resubmit.
And I want to thank each of you who took the time and energy to write your story and share it with us. The response was overwhelming, and the submissions were full of touching and insightful stories.
Below is a list of the nine stories that are currently slated to be published in the book. If you are on this list, you should have received an email from Erin today. If you have not, it is very important that you please email her at erin@29gifts.org.
