I got this idea after watching Oprah's program on kids who have committed suicide after being bullied.
KINDNESS CHALLENGE FOR ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Have demonstration of kind and unkind behavior in a school assembly….without telling the kids what is going on…then explain it to them and have them tell how each demo made them feel.
Initiate a kindness challenge for each child to do at least one act of kindness each day and write or tell about it....sort of like we do here. Once a week, vote for the kindest act or kindest student and give that student a certificate and/or some other type of acknowledgment.
This could be expanded to some kind of way to give prizes to the kindest student….like gift certificates to TOYS R US or Target or something like that, with a really nice prize at the end of each semester or school year.
I think for kids, it would be better to concentrate on giving acts of kindness, and not much on giving "things."
Since this school year is almost over, there's plenty of time to get plans made for something like this for the next school year. I think I'll approach my neigborhood school principal and see what she thinks.
