Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
To remind myself how fortunate I am with the life I have - money can't buy you health or happiness
What I'd most like to receive:
a sense of value/worth, knowing I'm doing a "good thing"
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
Psychologies Magazine
About me:
Been happily married for 15 years with a 14 year old son. Like going to the gym to "de-stress" from the pressures of work/life and clear my head!

Yes

Desiderata (written by Max Ehrmann in 1927)

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
And remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly & clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull & ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud & aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain & bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing future of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment
it is perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness.
Beyond wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees & the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labours & aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

Day 29 - THANK YOU ALL!

Posted on December 21, 2008 at 3:50am 2 Comments

Woohoo .......... I made it .............. fell by the wayside several times along the way but accepted those "delays" and picked up where I left off and here I am! I've gotten so much from this challenge and from all of you who've given me support directly and those who've helped just in contributing to this site. I hope you all have a wonderful christmas and happy year ahead.

My give for the final day of this, my first (but not last) round is the equivalent of 29 pounds sterling… Continue

Day 28 - "show restraint"

Posted on December 20, 2008 at 1:30pm 2 Comments

Brother's wedding today - quiet, family affair (only 20 or so guests - close family who I don't tend to take too much to do with)! Love my brother to bits so my "give" for today was to make the effort to "integrate" for his sake and to be courteous and friendly ............ will sound strange to those of you who have very close family units but mine's so not like that! Realised though that I have alot to be thankful for, very proud of my brother, husband and son.

Nephew Jonathan, who… Continue

Day 27

Posted on December 19, 2008 at 10:30am 1 Comment

Yesterday I was collecting money for raffle tickets for the Children in Need charity - our workplace donates a (paid) day off to the winner of the raffle and all proceeds go to this charity. I have a colleague who works 3 jobs just to make ends meet and support her family and so every single penny counts for her - she's a fighter and always puts her friends and family before herself - so I bought one of the raffle tickets and donated it to her. I hope she wins (even though I'd love the prize… Continue

Day 26 "due cognisance"

Posted on December 17, 2008 at 1:34pm 0 Comments

Feeling a bit disappointed with myself of late - work has taken a precedence as has xmas preparations and not been as focussed on daily "gives" as I'd previously been. Though I know we don't always take note of how we've given and maybe don't recognise our contributions for what they are. I can say I've given 110% to my workplace and colleagues in my temporary seconded post - trying to make things better/easier for them as well as providing a better service for all our "customers". Also, lucky… Continue

Day 25 - "it's the little things"

Posted on December 11, 2008 at 12:00pm 3 Comments

Gave a gift of a little photo album to one of my team today, she's been invaluable in helping me get to grips with my new post (though I'm sure she doesn't realise how much she's helped me). She's heading off to Australia for the next four weeks to see her son and grandchild, I think this'll be her first trip like that without her husband who has sadly passed away. Anyway, I gave her the album so that she can have a "focus" on capturing her trip on camera to share with us all on her return home… Continue

Thank you Alena for your comments about me deciding to stay with it. The main reason is because of people like yourself who add so much to this site and challenge. Your photo of you is beautiful and so are all the others of your family, etc. Hope we can talk more frequently.
Blessings, Effie

Hi Alena, thanks for your positive comments. Funny, I picked your blog first when I was looking for something to read. Glad my "gifts" gave you inspiration. Kind regards

Hi Alena, counselling is really interesting the course I'm doing is only a short one with the Open University. What do you do with the rugby?? Between you and me I don't understand the game but my son plays and my boyfriend coaches so I figured if you can't beat them, join them, it's one of the best things I've ever done x
