Kinder children are more popular By Victoria Gill BBC reporter

Performing deliberate acts of kindness makes pre-teen children more popular with their peers, say scientists.A team led by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, "assigned" children three acts of kindness each week for four weeks. After the four weeks, children were happier and more liked by classmates. The researchers say than encouraging such simple "positive acts" could help children to get along with classmates and even prevent instances of bullying.…See More

Epilog of 29 Gifts in 29 Days (The takeaway)

So has 29 Gifts in 29 Days changed me?It has.  I travel through my days looking through a different lens now.  Actively I look to see how and where I might give.  Recently while in Maryland, I saw college kids walking among the cars stopped at traffic lights collecting money to fight cancer.  In the past I would ignore them and  just look straight ahead.  That day I wound down the window and handed them a bill.  Four miles away another pair of students were collecting for the same cause.  It’s…See More

Day 29 of 29 Gifts in 29 Days – September 27 “Calling Mom”

My 29th gift is one I shoot to do every day but don’t. Calling my Mom. She lives 300 hundred miles south in Jersey at an independent living complex. Since Dad died 16 months ago, Mom is living the life of a widow that she had no preparation for. Married for 66 years, she and he were compatible and loving; they were comfortable with their daily routines, be they breakfast together, with eggs on Saturday morning, reading the New York Times, going to “current events” on Friday, or dining with…See More

Day 28 of 29 Gifts in 29 Days – September 26 “Lingering”

One of my volunteer positions in retirement is as a rounder at our local York Hospital. As a rounder, I go around to patient rooms to see how we are taking care of them. Among the questions I ask, Is there night time noise? Does the staff check in with you regularly? Would you like to see someone about spiritual care? What would have made your stay even better?I always begin my rounding in the birthing unit. Families with newborns are often upbeat and happy with a capital H. Moms are beaming;…See More

Day 27 of 29 Gifts in 29 Days - September 25 “Stopping by”

Sometimes it’s easier just heading for home: check email, watch a little Sports Center, and then complete the trifecta by taking a nap. After biking to get my flu shot at York Hospital midafternoon, I realize I haven’t given a gift today. Concerned, I consider the rest of my day, and decide to stop by and see my friend Vin; he’s been in the hospital and has been weary of late. When I arrive, he and Jim, another of Vin’s readers, are on the front patio deep in conversation, this time about who…See More

Day 22 of 29 Gifts in 29 Days – September 20 “Simple kindnesses”

Starting my fourth week of 29 Days of Giving, I’m learning that the gifts don’t have to be dramatic and earth shaking. One doesn’t need to feed a starving Somalian child, though that would be a very good thing and, indeed, a four star gift. But four star gifts come in small packages too. They can be simple kindnesses. When Hannah’s brother Doug fretted about the sorry state of the world, especially environmentally, Hannah shared his concern but made her mark by making a difference in the life of…See More

Day 14 of 29 Gifts in 29 Days – September 12 “Empty seat”

I have no idea where my gift is coming from today, but it won’t be from a lack of opportunities.  First, I’m off to a morning workshop on Sleep for Seniors at the York Senior Center.  Later in the day at York Hospital I round (i.e., I go around to patient rooms to see how we as a hospital are taking care of them.) and then read to my friend Vin.I am not the best sleeper, but I’m not awful either.  I’m one of those who falls asleep quite easily after reading or working on a crossword puzzle in…See More

Day 11 of 29 Gifts in 29 Days September 9 “Gentle, soft giving"

I love Sunday mornings.   Sleeping in, time to do my morning ritual (exercises, gratitudes, prayers, meditation and the like) without hurry.  The Sunday New York Times.  (We don’t buy another paper all week because it takes us seven days to get through the Sunday Times.)  Then it’s three miles into town to First Parish Church.  Sitting on the pew, I settle in and find peace in the faith and trust community.  There’s a routine and a flow to the service that comforts, soothes, and welcomes me. …See More

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
I read an article in the Sunday Review of the New York Times (July 8, 2012) titled “Don’t Indulge. Be Happy.” Among other things, it suggested that greater happiness comes by doing things for others than for oneself. This 29 day challenge of giving gives me another opportunity to learn the value and satisfaction of giving.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
Our minister recommended the book after I began blogging about giving $20 away based on a New York Times article. See my blog http://over60hiker.wordpress.com/
About me:
I'm a retired teacher/professor who taught in the public schools of California, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Maine as well as in the education departments at at Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of New England in Biddedord, Maine. I taught courses in how to teach reading and writing in public schools to pre-service teachers at both places. I married the love of my life and have three wonderful adult children.

We have had rain and wind for 3 or 4 days now. It is crummy to say the least! There are no schools in session and the wind is expected to be worse today. I guess we are fortunate tho that we are not getting snow and sleet as they are elsewhere in the state. I am glad you and Hannah are okay..please take care, I hope you both will escape the worst of it!
