Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
i am generally a pretty giving person, but i want to become more aware of my actions and their effects on both me and the world.
What I'd most like to receive:
the knowledge that what i do really does make a difference in the world.

About me:
i am a 48 YO female who lives in East TX. i have three children, two stepchildren, and nine grandchildren altogether. i am an avid reader and i love to make quilts.

my husband and i decided a year ago that since the kids are all grown and gone that we would like to do some traveling, so we sold all our furniture and rented out our house to a friend. now we live in a travel trailer next to my mother in law's house when we are not on the road.we have been all over Florida and taken a trip to Gettysburg PA via Kentucky, Tennessee, and WV, circling back around through Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. we plan to go west next.

i envision a world where people will reach out to each other instead of building walls. i believe that the world is moving rapidly towards that ideal and i want to do my part. one person at a time, it will happen.

Day 20 of Round ? - birthday gifts

today was my friend Brenda's birthday. i went over before she had to go to work and gave her a handmade birthday card and a sweet little retablo that came from Peru. it's like a tiny wooden house with a hinged door and inside is a Nativity scene made of tiny hand painted clay figures. she loved the present, but the card really got her - she got all teary eyed and hugged my neck.

i got a very special receive in the mail today - a card from Elly Rose and a picture drawn by her granddaughte… Continue

A Totally Unexpected and Awesome Receive!

i had an incredible receive a little while ago that i just had to share. first, a little background. my birthday is November 27 and i decided to take a page from Stacey and ask my friends on Facebook to donate to a cause as a birthday gift. the cause i chose was the Susan Komen Breast Cancer foundation (since my sister Jenny died a few years ago from it). a couple of friends donated so far and i was pleased with how it was going.

anyway, today i got a notice that a man i had never heard of befo… Continue

a little fun

i have a confession to make: despite my good intentions, i am not doing too well at the self-care thing. somehow it makes me feel selfish to do nice things for myself on a regular basis. i'm not sure why that is. i've skipped several days already and am unsure whether to just pick up where i left off or if i should start over again.

on a lighter note, i made a gag gift for my son's birthday. he always puts something on his list that is totally out of the question just as a joke - this year it w… Continue

The Next Round - Throwing myself bones

Mbali suggested in her Throw Me A Bone discussion that we finish out the round we were on and make the next one a round of "giving to self". so, here i am. something tells me that this won't be as easy as it sounds.

so, today i was on Facebook and decided to click on a teaser ad for MoonAlice. turned out it is a music site, actually a band, and it has free music downloads and you can click on several songs that will stream live to your computer. i really really liked them, they reminded… Continue

Day 29

today i got a second pumpkin and carved it for my Mother in law. she was so surprised and pleased - she had never had a jack-o-lantern before.
my granddaughter had called me last night and asked if i would come to her Book Fair at her school next Wednesday. she lives almost three hours from me. i called her back tonight and told her that i couldn't make it. i asked her if she had a catalog of the books that would be for sale and if there was one she especially wanted. she told me what it was and… Continue

Dawn, Thank you so much for the very warm welcome. It's truly appreciated. I love your quilts! They are so beautiful! Great work! I will get mine posted soon! In reading your blog I am so sorry about your sister. {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}} I am blessed because my Mom is a breast cancer survivor and the one that taught me to quilt. Thanks for being my first friendly face! ;-)

hi dawn, you asked how my compassionate cakes project is going ~ thank you, wanted to give you an update~ it is going very well, i still have a long way to go, but i am making them one or 2 at a time in my own kitchen with one oven, the kids are helping me and helping me deliver them, which is great!
The satisfaction and thrill of giving the cakes is unbelievable! People are truly amazed and love receiving a whole cake baked for them. They are not hard to make, I am using box mixes and icing, for the cost of 100 cakes, I can't afford to make them "from scratch" or all of the extra time! WOW.....I may be crazy, but not that crazy! ha! The give is such a wonderful give to people, they are so surprised and I also give them a "tag" with the story of how I entered the Kindness contest and won and how they need to share the cakes with neighbors....Its been a blessing...thanks again for asking! Take care!

Happy Thanksgiving. Giving my family dinner today, INCLUDING turkey for my Mom and nephew, which is a big deal for me as I am a vegetarian and haven't bought meat in years. Ugh. Give the gift of life--go veg. Hmmm, so I guess I give that every day.

Good give, Soccer guy, time is definitely one of the best gives-- after all, we all only have so much time, unlike money we can't 'make' more time, so the only way to get more is as a gift! and your future students will benefit too!
