by Kent Nerburn from Letters to My Son

"Remember to be gentle with yourself and others. We are all children of chance, and none can say why some fields will blossom and others lay brown beneath the August sun. Care for those around you. Look past your differences. Their dreams are no less than yours, their choices in life no more easily made. And give. Give in any way you can, of whatever you possess. To give is to love. To withhold is to wither. Care less for your harvest than how it is shared, and your life will have meaning and your heart will have peace."

Day 17 ~ Round 4 Flowers say more than words

Today was busy and so was yesterday as it involved all the neighbors to show one sweet and lovely 92 year old lady among us who lives across the street how much she is appreciated and loved. Last month she fell and fractured her wrist and broke her hip and needed surgery. She's been home now for almost 2 weeks and the other day she was sitting out on her porch with her daughter who is staying with her while she recovers. As I looked over at her and waved and said "Hi" I was struck with an impend… Continue

Day 14 ~ Round 4 Two Lonely Bagels

I went to the doctor and after I left the office, I wheeled down to the supermarket to buy some fresh veggies and brown rice for stir fry later. When I went past the bakery I spied two lonely bagels just sitting there on the shelf waiting for someone like me to stop and smell the aroma of fresh baked bread that can melt even the hardest heart that is determined to lose a few pounds. Well, I bought them and ate some of one while waiting for my ride. The fellow who picked me up was so keenly aware… Continue

Day 10 ~ Round 4 Trust Me

There's a saying that goes, "Never trust a person that says, 'Trust me'." In this case though, you can trust me when I say I am giving even though I don't post them daily. I have been experiencing pain in my left hand which is letting me know I'm overdue for carpal tunnel surgery. I've been putting it off for years and now I must "give in" and have it done. So that is going to be a give when it happens along with all the cards, letters, phone calls, gifts for birthdays, anniversaries & weddi… Continue

DAY ~ 1 ROUND ~ 4 Hard to believe!

As I'm starting a new round, I can remember when I finished round 1 and I was ready to say good-bye. Then Sharon and Peter stopped me in my tracks and here I am on round 4. This is so amazing when I think of where I was when I started this challenge (and there are days when it is) and where I am now. I am rich for joining and even richer for staying on. Now, I can't imagine not having this second home to visit as often as I do. My give today is to me by staying on this challenge to see how far i… Continue

Days 28 & 29 ~ Round 3

This is a special time of year as the month of February comes to a close and March, marches in on us. Where is the time going, I ask? These two days (today and tomorrow) will be spent celebrating my marriage of 17 years which is a miracle gift from God. We were married on February 29th and last year we had a leap year but that was when I was living alone while my husband was on a solo mission trying to find himself. Since he has been back it has been a very trying time for each of us financially… Continue

Hi Effie, I have been rather scarce in keeping contact lately. How are you? I do hope life is handling you with plenty of kindness and love.

Thank you so much for your comments on my photos. Yes I did watch the movie "Faith Like a Potato". I enjoyed it so much I went out and bought the book. I believe his son has brought out another DVD. I haven't seen that one. I am truly blessed with living in this beautiful country. The most amazing thing for me is that with traveling a few kilometers, you can go from rich fertile ground to dry half desert country.
By the way did you ever see the movie "Cry, The Beloved Country"? Actually I had better come to a close before I rattle off all the good movies made in and about South Africa. Keep well Effie. You are always in my thoughts and prayers.

It looks like you and I started at the same time with round one. Interesting that both of us experienced the issue with impatience in lines today. I look forward to your future posts and seeing how both our giving journeys progress.

This is just awesome, Southernly. Truly! One of my biggest problems is impatience in lines & in traffic. I will make a point of giving space & courtesy to other drivers, & I thank YOU for the inspiration.
