- Why I'm choosing to give:
- Today I am challenge to think about what I love and what motivates me. One of the things I love is the friendship’s we have made since we opened the Marietta Wine Market in May of 2005 on the square and the people we have met in the community. So many of them have touched our lives and help make me a better person.
Recently I read an article in the AJC about “Spreading Kindness”. It tells how After reading the book “29 Gifts” by Cami Walker, Souper Cami Levison decided she and her staff would do random acts of kindness and invite their customers to participate starting May 1st. I liked the idea so much I thought I would challenge our own staff and invite the friends of the Marietta Wine Market to participate also starting May1st.
- What I'd most like to receive:
- I do believe that the 29 Gifts can show how a simple, daily practice of altruism can dramatically alter your outlook on the world. I would like to see others take the challenge with me and challenge others to do the same.
- How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
- Read an article in the AJC about “Spreading Kindness”.
- About me:
- In 2010 gave up alcohol for lent. No beer, wine or liquor from Feb 17th- April 4th 2010. Although tempted , with the help of chocolate, I am proud to say made it without a sip for 47 days. The fact that my husband Randall and I own a wine shop on the square in Marietta made it an even bigger challenge.
This year I really wanted to attend the High Museum Trade Tasting in March and have drinks on the beach with my sister on Spring Break in April. Thus my lent challenge for 2011, to the dismay of chocolate companies, was to practice and try to live the Jesus Creed. Two simple commandments: #1 “ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” #2 “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Ah... it seems simple, but the challenge for me was overcoming the fact that we are taught never to mix religion or politics with business. I read the book “Have A Little Faith” while on Spring Break. It reminded me that nobody is perfect and the importance of accepting people as they are. Thus I hope you will accept me as I do my best to live the Jesus Creed and encourage others to do the same.
Note: The Jesus Creed calls us to neighbor-love-regardless of who the neighbor might be. You cannot determine in advance to whom you will need to act in neighbor-love. Neither can you determine what kind of love you will show. To discern what prompts neighbor-love, we need to develop eyes that see and ears that hear needs.
