I have recently completed my first round of the challenge and was forever changed by the whole experience, so I don't regret doing it at all. Most of my posts were very long and introspective and I…Continue

I give because I have nothing but time.........

While I'm still confined here in my hospital bed in our family room recuperating from a knee surgery several weeks ago, today I thought of a cool gift that cost me a whopping 99 cents and only took a few hours of my time (something I have more than enough of right now!), helped me to learn something new about computers, and entertained me with things I love to do. Not much more of a win-win situation than that! One of my older son's long-time friends from college and her husband had their first…See More

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
I've been giving random gifts almost daily for many years, but have never journaled about it. I hope to expand my horizons of what I normally give and with that, find new interests and passions.
What I'd most like to receive:
I'd like to learn more about myself-I'm a recovering perfectionist and very critical of many things about myself. I'd like to come to terms with the things that I do are helpful and kind and don't have to be "just right".
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
Read the book and looked up the website.
About me:
I'm 58 years old with a loving husband of 31 years and two grown sons-I've been struggling for the past two years with an as yet undiagnosed disease that had led to increasing physical disability and tremendous pain. I've known for years about the joy of volunteering and I do so in a grade school library which is very much appreciated, but I'm hoping to find something that's more meaningful and fulfilling.

Mindful Meditation for Pain Relief

I've come across what I believe might be a valuable resource for those of us dealing with unresolved chronic pain-a CD called Mindful Meditation for Pain Relief by Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Several years ago, when I was trying to help a friend cope with her anxiety as her teenage daughter was battling cancer, I took a several-session introduction to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)-she found no merit in it at all, but I was intrigued by the concept. This CD set takes the concept one step further by instruction how to integrate the reality of constant pain into the consciousness of being in the present. It's not an easy fix and no claims are made that pain will be reduced; the idea is just to change how one's brain processes the sensations and ideas about pain. It will require weeks, if not months of constant listening to incorporate the practices into one's own life.

I do believe that conscious gift-giving is beneficial in and of itself for so many reasons; it is spoken about as one of the strategies for coping with serious stresses, illnesses and pain, but it is considered a distraction rather than truly coming to terms with really dealing with the problem-I have found this to be true in my own life and am still searching for something more. After listening to this for the past few days, I feel there might be great merit in what I've heard and intend to pursue it:

I give by expressing my gratitude........

Just about one month ago, my world as I knew it all came tumbling down; on December 18, 2011 I had an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon. He had performed a knee surgery on me back in December of 2009 (from which it took me about a year to recover)  and has been following me every since; my knees have been growing progressively more painful and although he has been…

I give because "I'm crafty"!

Last night found us at 42° 23′ 9″ N, 88° 14′ 9″ W at the Johnsburg Public Library (almost two hours from our house during rush hour...we could see Wisconsin from there!)......dropping off this gift I/we made for Kristen Finch, wife of David (author of The Journal of Best Practices), who mentioned on FB it was an idea she loved, but wasn't that crafty and I ever so innocently said, "Oh, I'm…

Another phenomenal giving story.....

This story was brought to my attention by a former 29gifts member, who went on to become The Gift Prolific....now coming to the completion of his one year endeavor to give a gift of some sort every day for one year, paint a painting and write a short blog about it and then coming up shortly giving away all 365 paintings at the Burning Man Festival in Nevada (all of which are numbered so that the recipient can look back…
