Day 14

Well, yesterday I decided to give a gift to myself. I went for a relaxing, indulgent pedicure--something I haven't done for a long time. It was heaven! Today, we'll see what happens. . .See More

Day 13

Today, my gift was to my granddaughter, seven-year-old Clare, but it was so fun that it seemed like a gift to myself, too. I had decided that once in awhile, I was going to pick up just one of my two grandchildren (brother and sister) and spend special time with them. Today, I picked Clare up after school, and we talked about what we should do together. I had already sort of planned that we could go to Michael's and find an Easter craft or something fun to make together. Clare liked that idea…See More

Days 8 and 9

Yesterday, my mom, dad, sister and I drove up to Ventura to have lunch with my niece, who has cerebral palsy. I hadn't seen her for quite a while. We usually take my parents' car and my sister usually drives for us. My gift yesterday was to have us take my car and for me to do part of the driving. It was about a 200 mile round trip. What I noticed was that I didn't mind at all contributing the gas and helping with the driving. In fact, I think it made me enjoy the whole outing more, and my dad…See More

Day 7

Yesterday was Day 7. My gift was a bag of fresh lemons from my neighbor's tree (plus a little candy treat and a flower) to an old friend who had just gotten some exciting news. This friend has actually taught me something about generosity. She is a very giving person, even though she has very little money. She's creative in the things she gives and always seems so happy about it. I'm still "watching" myself to see how this giving experience changes me. I'm already very grateful for so much that…See More

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
I think I was drawn to Cami's book because I am going through a frustrating time with tendonitis in both of my hands which is keeping me from writing songs and playing the piano. I finally retired from teaching and was looking forward to my music, and now I have to be patient and let my hands heal. Cami's story gave me much-needed perspective and a new outlook.
What I'd most like to receive:
I would most like to receive healing to my hands. But, I would also like to find other ways to be creative besides my music and to cultivate more meaningful friendships.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
I found the book in a bookstore in Pasadena.
About me:
I just retired from teaching elementary school for 22 years. I was a little anxious about retiring, but I'm finding that I love it! I read The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron, and have been trying to incorporate her ideas about finding ways to live a more creative life. I love to write songs and have written two school musicals--Now I need to discover what comes next.

Day 22

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 10:31pm 3 Comments

Today was my grandson's special afternoon with me. I picked him up and we discussed what he wanted to do. Our first plan was to go get some frozen yogurt and then go buy him some shoes (like I did with his sister last week). But then, he saw the video game arcade and gave me this smile and said, "Or. . ." I asked him if he would really rather go there than get some shoes, and he said yes. Kids are so funny! Anyway, that's what we did. He… Continue

Day 21

Posted on April 15, 2011 at 10:22pm 4 Comments

Yesterday was Day 21. I opened the email from 29-Day Giving Challenge asking for donations for MS research. I decided that would be my gift for the day, so I made my donation and was very glad to do so. It would be so wonderful if a cure could be found. I hope I never take my health for granted.

Day 20

Posted on April 14, 2011 at 9:31am 3 Comments

Yesterday was Day 20. Before I retired, I always felt guilty about not going to visit my parents more often. I didn't even call them as often as I should have. Well, I can't undo the past, but a couple of months ago, I decided I would go up to visit them every week and take a nice lunch to share, so that my 90-year-old mom wouldn't have to go to any trouble (My dad is 98!) I invited my sister to join us, so now every week, on a Wed. or… Continue

Day 19

Posted on April 14, 2011 at 9:20am 1 Comment

On Day 19, I picked up Nick and Clare from school and took them out for a smoothie at Jamba Juice. They were SO cute! We sat outside by a fountain at the mall--well, I sat, and they entertained themselves at the edge of the fountain, throwing in coins, trying to stop the water flow, etc. Then, we went to the pet store and looked at the cats and dogs for awhile. Just spending  time with them every week keeps us connected, and chatting… Continue
