I missed a day, so had to start over. So Day 1 was yesterday. I took an hour and a half drive to my sister's place to help her organize her closets in her new house. She greets every move forward with complaints about what else still needs to be done, so it was certainly trying. But if anything, it makes me appreciate my life even more - I don't think I could survive a life lived in such a stressed out state, but if it works for her, so be it.
Today I shoveled a bit of a friend's…

Growing up, the men of the household were responsible for taking the garbage out. I never envied my father nor my brother for that task. It's to the point that should the garbage be full, I'll call out to Dad to come and take care of it. Not to say I can't do it myself, or that I never have, but usually me and Mom are in the middle of cooking up a storm, so it's easier if we don't have to interrupt our stride....
Yesterday, Dad sat relaxing the living room while Mom and I were…

Day 3: gave an apology
Day 4: gave someone the benefit of the doubt, and decided to give a smile instead of a complaint

Anita Silva said… We did the Camino in the summer (July) with our two children who were 12 and 10 at the time. On average we walked 17 km per day, which is about 11 miles, so 12 miles on average (without children) should be fine. It wasn't difficult to find accommodation, there are plenty of albergues (hostals) on the way. If you want to have a bed it is indeed recommendable to arrive not too late. If you have a mattress with you you can always find shelter as most hostals will offer you a place on the floor if the beds are full. It happened to us on a couple of occasions and we then searched for a hotel, which cost a bit more, but we didn't carry mattresses and wanted a proper bed. Most hostals want you out early in the morning (by 7.30 approx.) Make sure you start somewhere where you can acquire a 'stamp card' which gives you access to the inns and is your proof of walking. Socks should be comfortable walking socks and make sure you have comfortable shoes (try them out before!) to avoid blisters (I suffered from that). It is handy to use a thin cloth as a towel (pareo) as it is light and will dry quickly. Have you looked on the websites about the Camino? What is your starting point? Kind regards, Anita
Anita Silva said… Hi Rebecca, just browsed through your website and read that you are going to walk the Camino this year. I walked the (last 130 km of the) Camino in 2003 with my family and it was a great experience. Kind regards, Anita
