Days 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31

Monday, my gift was downtime for my daughters; I let them sleep in, tinker with the stuff they got for Christmas and we all sat on the couch and started Disc 1 of their Glee Season 2 set.  Tuesday, my gift was being at my honey's side all day and all night as he battled through nausea and diarrhea; it was a very bad case of stomach flu, and he has lost 5 pounds because of it; he's still not 100% today.  Wednesday, my gift was a phone call to my Mom who sounded really happy; I didn't talk with…See More

Days 22, 23, 24 and 25

Thursday my gift was $100 Fred Meyer gift card for my daughter's exchange supervisor; this is actually a gift from our whole family (my husband, me and the girls) for the one lady who does so much for us as a family.  Friday my gift was a Simplicity 2012 calendar for my stepdaughter's mom.  Saturday my gift was going with my honey to his work so he won't have to be alone on Christmas eve.  Today, Christmas day, my gift is another 3 hours (just 10 miles this time) on the treadmill for myself. …See More

Days 19, 20 and 21

Monday, my gift was no school/a day off for my girls; we went Christmas shopping the whole day!  Yesterday my gift was two hours for my 40 something husband honey and watching him, for the first time, play hockey on rental quads with a bunch of 16 year olds. And today, my gift was a big box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates for my dentist and her entire staff.  :-)    See More

Day 18

Today my gift was kind consideration for the guy at the fitness shop who attempted to sell me used equipment.  I had paid and placed an order about three weeks ago and had gone to pick up the item twice already but something always went wrong and I had left the store empty handed.  Today, for the third time, we went to pick it up, and what the guy had for me was an open box and the item bearing undeniable signs of already having been used.  I didn't pass judgment; I just said to please call me…See More

Day 15

Today my gift was my calm, quiet response to my stepdaughter after receiving the news of her academic probation for having three weeks of backlog in math.  For a kid who got one of the highest MSP scores in math just last spring, she and I both knew it wasn't the math that was the problem.  I just hope this will be a lesson well learned for her.See More

Day 12

Today my gift was $10 for the Achon Uganda Children's Fund.  The January 2012 Runner's World issue featured a story on Julius Achon, a two-time Olympic runner whose greatest passion is to give back to his homeland the gifts he has received.  I believe he is genuine and sincere in his efforts, and someday, I hope to do more for his worthy cause.See More

Day 10 and 11

Yesterday my gift was 3 hours on the treadmill for myself.  I logged in 11 miles and loved every stride, every breath.  Today my gift is a chocolate turkey wrapped in bright, colorful, shimmering foil for our speed skating coach who organized "the Turkey Showdown"--the best inline speed skating meet this part of the Northwest :-)See More

Days 8 and 9

Yesterday my gift was a hearty tapas (very late night) meal for my two starving, hardworking speed skating daughters.  They had a very hard practice last night and were exhausted.  Today my gift is a pearl rosary bracelet for this angel of a lady in my family's life.  Five years ago, after a turbulent divorce, this lady was assigned by the court to be my daughter's visit supervisor.  She has brought a stability to my family that I will forever be grateful for.     See More

Day 5

Today my gift was for my honey.  My husband loves this video game called Double Dash which he and our daughters used to play everyday when they were in elementary school.  But when I started homeschooling the girls in middle school, academics became first priority.  So today after dinner, we all grabbed our controllers and engaged in finger acrobatics for more than an hour.  It was a happy, fun time for all of us :-) See More

Day 4

Today my gift was patience for my daughters. We homeschool, and punctuality in submitting assignments has been a recurring problem.  Instead of berating them about it (which I feel they deserve at this point considering their recidivism), I asked about it, probed into the circumstances of the failure to finish the work on time, and we worked it out so that they can better manage their time, understand what went awry in the process and realize they have options such as asking for an extension,…See More

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
Two kinds of people born in the world: takers and givers. I happen to be a giver, always was, always will be. Sometimes, actually, it's a curse, but a good one.
What I'd most like to receive:
From my two daughters, I like receiving hard work and great effort from them. From my husband, I like receiving warm snuggies, protective glances and news that he ate well for lunch at work and plans to run on the treadmill in the evening.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
I stumbled on the book at Value Village; then stumbled on another copy at Goodwill.
About me:
I homeschool my 13-year old daughter from my first marriage and my husband's 13-year old daughter from his second marriage. I created this 5-year AP program for my girls, and this year, we're doing AP English, AP US History and AP US Government. For AP English, what I do is I buy cheap copies of wonderful books in thrift stores so that my girls and I sit down at the table and we all take turns reading aloud. We started reading the 29-Day Gifts book in November, and as December starts today, we just finished Chapter 8, and the girls and I are starting our own 29-day gift giving and we'll do it for all 31 days of December.
