Laundry basket secrets: Day 29

This is day 29 second time round and I wanted to concentrate on intangibles this time - the patience, tolerance, listening, etc, that I sometimes struggle with.

I was reflecting on the last 29 days for this blog and decided I wanted to share with you what happened when I made a chore into a gift.

In our house we share the chores. My husband definitely does his share, and I'd say that over the years we've come out pretty even in what we do. Except for the laundry. My husband is good at putting… Continue

Bonfire night is coming up, so here is a recipe for all of you

I know most people on this site are over in the States, where I guess you don't have Bonfire Night. Here in England we celebrate the 5th November with a bonfire and fireworks and we burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament a long time ago.

We did halloween, too, but we didn't have pumpkins. My Dad used to carve out a swede to make a lantern - so the smell of burnt swede is the smell of halloween for me.

When I was a kid in the north of England it was traditio… Continue

Putting away the laundry

I have been trying hard to give intangibles this cycle - time, patience, love. That sort of stuff. I actually would find it easier just to go out and buy things, but this is what I need to do. So last week my husband took the kids up to London. We had a complicated day - I had to go to Exeter, our nearest city, for radiotherapy in the morning, and he was working. So my friend Ann picked up me and the kids, dropped the kids at my mum's, husband picked them up, drove an hour to the railway station… Continue

Marigolds are for vitality

I sat down and wrote a card to my friend who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. It had a picture of marigolds - and a sparkly fairy - and said that marigolds mean vitality. We still have a few marigolds in the garden, so I went out and picked a couple and enclosed some petals in the card.

We have a friend who has just started a college course and is really hard up, so we have been finding him work to do on our property. Does that count as a give? We are getting so much out of it, but p… Continue

Giving time

Well, I'm half way through the radiotherapy, and am flagging a bit. The hour and a half drive each way doesn't help. Thank goodness for my support team. They make my life so easy.

My Dad. Ever ready to drive me anywhere.

My Mum. Worries for England, but manages to come up with the goods when I need her.

Cath. Has the kids, organises me into resting, drove me down for radio, brought a packed lunch, makes me laugh.

Ann. Drove me down, bought me lunch, always there.

Jess. Takes the kids, takes… Continue

Oh, Sarah, I saw 3 beautiful films by Hana's father, Mohsen Makhmalbaf. They were KANDAHAR, GABBEH and THE SILENCE. All 3 are excellent films and I highly recommend them. Gabbeh and The Silence are enchanting! Kandahar is a semi-documentary of a woman trying to get to her sister in Afghanistan during the time of Taliban regime (when women aren't supposed to be traveling alone) before she commits suicide on the coming eclipse (as she'd written in her letter to her of 3 months ago). And I also recommend seeing the movie I'd mentioned in my first comment - OSAMA, about a little girl living under Taliban regime who's mom tries to pass off as a boy so that she can work (as the father has been killed, women aren't allowed to work and they are starving). This is extremely risky and dangerous as, if they find out, they'll kill the child.

I'm sorry, I can go on and on...I've seen so many great middle eastern films in the last few years. I will check out "Buddha collapsed out of shame"!

Hey Sarah!
How are you feeling these days?
I have a website at leatherbookcovers.net where you can see my work.
I make 100% handmade leather bookcovers primarily for conference approved recovery literature, like NA and AA. I have done Planners, calendars, paperback, and bible covers too. I recently started making key chains and bookmarks. I have prices high enough now, I am not overwhelmed with orders! I have been selling them for the last 2 & 1/2 years.

Absolutely, it's addictive, and we must have balance, of which I don't. I am fortunate to be here alone most of the day, and matters not much what I do as long as I get my book covers made, and the animals are fed.
Sometimes I even clean and feed my husband, but he really likes to cook and does a much better job than me!

Sarah,
I requested to be your friend.
If you are still interested in being my online friend here, PLEASE click on my little picture-to the left-go to my profile and send me a friend request!
We can only request 100 friends at a time and I am over my limit, as I am the
Official Welcomer of International Women!
I will be deleting your request and many other old ones to make room for the new ones!
Thanks, and certainly nothing personal!

Thanks so much for your kind words! I haven't started my chemo yet, but will soon- I just had a bone marrow test yesterday (ouch!), and once those results are in, they'll be able to figure out exactly what stage I am and go from there.

No email yet, but I will keep watching.....if you like, try GailRN@hotmail.com.

Tomorrow my family is throwing a "surprise"party for my 40th birthday. We are going to the house that it will be taking place, to help prepare the food. I'm very excited for an evening escape away from thoughts of worry or fear or sickness.

Glad this is a "good" week....enjoy your son!!! They grow too fast. Mine left for Marine Corps basic training on Mother's Day.
