Why I'm choosing to give:
"Giving is good, but taking is bad and brings death."
(Hesiod, c. 8th C BCE, Works and Days).
What I'd most like to receive:
As Kate from selftaughtgirl.com wrote on her mirror: "I dare the world to show me how beautiful, loved, healthy and prosperous I can be! (And I dare myself to receive it all!)" Bring it on, Universe! Give me miracles.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
Cami Walker is in my tribe of sisters.
About me:
I am currently a Ph.D. Foreign Language and Area Studies fellow at Boston University's Anthropology Department and African Studies Center. Previously I was a web designer and front-end developer.

I am a South Africanist, Anthropologist, Linguist, and Ethnomusicologist. My research looks at urban youth, language, and music. I speak Xhosa and Zulu, Latin, French, and Mandarin. I still need to learn Afrikaans. I volunteered in Cape Town in 2008 and was a Fulbright fellow at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2009. I move to South Africa for fieldwork in 2011. My plan is to do applied anthropology where I will work with think tanks and braintrusts to come up with solutions and recommendations for complex social problems, particularly in South Africa, preferably with NGOs and humanitarian agencies.

These days, my off time is spent drinking wine and scotch, watching movies, going out to see live music, eating oysters and steamed littlenecks, getting back into cooking now that I have a kitchen bigger than a breadbox, and reading junk novels that are not educational in any way with pots of tea and two orange cats from my small flat in Beacon Hill. Of course, I have very little off time these days.

A Bit of a Retrospective...

First, I must apologize for not keeping this journal up to date during my time in South Africa.

This is for two reasons. The first being that we were cautioned against blogging, since sometimes, especially as a foreigner, we're not thinking clearly on the ways in which WHAT we say could be misconstrued by the people around us and cause damage. Last year, for example, someone wrote about their frustrations with the culture clash at his school and it offended the principal so that the program had… Continue

Day -2: The Challenge Goes Home to Africa.

For those who have been following my stories, I will be rebooting and writing again about the next series of Gives. Or, rather, smaller gives within a Give. As some of you know, I am leaving for South Africa this week to volunteer to teach.

I leave y'all with a little story.

About a month and a half ago, towards the end of my last cycle, I met an ex-child soldier out of Africa (the one whose name means "tha… Continue

Days 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29: The End is Only the Beginning.

DAY 24:
Today I knew I'd feel sort of badly. I have my doctor's appointment for my medical clearance for the summer and that included vaccines, which despite anything the information pamphlets tell me never leaves me feeling very good. I'm not sure if it's the live virii or the mental reaction to knowing about the live virii coursing around in my muscles and bloodstream. So, in my own small way, I gave my body for the summer. Plus, as I finished school in January and am starting school in… Continue

Days 20, 21, 22, and 23.

DAY 20
I signed the petition for the International Violence Against Women Act after reading this article:

"He did not allow [use of condoms]. I did try. At the clinic I got them and took them home, but he said no. We quarreled. He did hit me. He overpowered me," said JA, a 48-year-old woman with HIV. "I told the clinic… Continue

Day 17, 18, and 19: And the Universe Gives Back... And How!!

DAY 17:
I received with great joy: I got an email saying that I'm getting an order of some kind from Friends of the Congo... Which I didn't order? So... I am eagerly anticipating the surprise! A beautiful journal from my cousin Susan, who I had sent a little package to a few weeks before this challenge. And... in my mail was the mother of all Gives: a letter telling me I got a fellowship for Boston University. A full ride. That's right. Full tuition and fees, PLUS a $15,000 stipend. WOW.… Continue

Yeah! So far I didn't get anything from the Library Address, and I always don't trust it due to many ways at which I can mention "many Hands to receive it from the post-person" which will result to an interest in finding what is inside the box, so please send them to Rachel's Address and I think you will first send her an E-Mail, so that you can fingure it out if she will be at home or away. Many Thankx 2 you my Angel!!!!

Hi my Xoxo! I hope your day is your day in US, and I am very please to get you here in Givers, at which to be honest it was you who invited me to the Givers. I think you can send it straight to the Library, but please consider its value, that is if its not documents only, I prefer to send it to Rachel's Address.
What a Wowww, Eve and I feel like I can not wait to see what you will send. All the best my Xoxo, UBENOSUKU OLUMNANDI NDIKUTHANDA KAKHULU VA!

Oh, all is well here. I just got back to OKC after visiting NOLA for the French Quarter Fest and V to the 10th. I met the guy who now lives in your old apartment - his name is Matt and he is renting from Peter and works with my friend Babette at a restaurant called Luke. We stuck up a conversation at Cosimo's. Funny, huh? ... I am winding up my Master's work and will finish in August. Just got offered a faculty position at University of Central Oklahoma, in the nursing program. I saw Kyle last week. He is fantastic. He is now a sophomore in college, still in Denton, Texas, and working part-time as a waiter. I'd love to come see you before you move away - when you leave NYC?
