Day 10 Working for childbirth choices

My giving today was centered on one of my passions - childbirth education. I feel very strongly that women in the U.S. have largely been given a bum deal when it comes to decision about prenatal care, birth and newborn care. I gave 2 hours of my time and $15 of my money today to the Oklahoma Birth Network. We are still in the organizing stages and trying to decide whether we want to organize independently or become a chapter of Birth Network National. I did initial research, started on a report… Continue

Day 5: And even a little bit for me...

For day 5 I gave myself a present. I am setting up a sewing studio in our home and I'm working to make it a beautiful, inspiring, peaceful place to be. As I've set out to organize the incredible amount of stuff that I've acquired over the years, I am finding that I haven't been willing to give myself those little extra details that will ultimately create my haven. Things like pretty storage containers that coordinate--you know, those little details.

One of the things that… Continue

Day 23-24

Day 23

The students began brainstorming their GIVE projects today. The kids and I went to freerice.com and played a few rounds while donating. After school, I gave some pizza slices and pop to the two hard workers who came to do homework.

Day 24

The students are really excited. They came up with lots of great ideas. The afternoon group came in eager to share how many "grains of rice" they managed to donate last night. I can;'t wait for them to share in writing.

I am… Continue

Day 22 DID I really GIVE?

Day22

This one was hard. I don't know if I actually GAVE or not. In the AM, I drove our guest to the train station...but it was on my way. Instead of teaching on Monday, I had been sent to a workshop on brain functions and organization to see if we want incorporate the practices into our Team structure...I had volunteered for it in the fall, so it didn't seem very altruistic. I did take notes for everyone so that the team will feel as if they have enough info to make an educated… Continue

Days 20-21

Day 20 in more detail

Well the Brain Tumor Walk-a-thon was really cool~my good friend Jill and her family met the kids and I out at Montrose Harbor early on Saturday AM. Although sunny, the temps had dropped over 40 degrees since the day before, so the spring walk we had planned upon turned into a blustery and brisk walk. We all had a great time. I hope this was only the beginning.

Later I picked up a friend who has been having a hard time and had the opportunity to talk with… Continue

Being challenged in another city.

I was in Toronto on Monday and tuesday and found it very easy to give away smiles, support and I was able to empty my pockets by giving away $2 (twoonies) to people in need on Yonge Street.

Day 1, 2 & 3

Rough start for me.....Good intentions to blog every day, but other things are on my mind. I took my 26 year old son to a residential alcohol and drug treatmetn facility. Thank goodness he didn't resist and he is there for at least 30 days. So my first gift was both to myself. The gift to myself was freedom from denial. I now choose to face the issue headon and with a clear vision of reality. My second gift was the treatment to my son. I pray he will embrace this opportunity for renewal.… Continue

Day 27

I think yesterday I finally understood what this was about (even though I've read the descriptions many times). Conscious giving. I think I give consciously in a sort of unconscious way all the time. But as this challenge draws to a close and I am running out of ideas, I had to consciously figure out who to give to on day 26. And then it dawned on as I was driving to work yesterday that act of giving is a conscious choice made to purely give with compassionate detachment and no expectations of… Continue

Days 21 - 28

This last week was packed with giving (and a bit of receiving too)

I gave away soap, $150 gift certificate, training, $5 cash, time, sent cards in the mail, flowers, wine and food. In fact the last week has been a blur of what I gave when - does that make sense??

Today is my day 29 - and it is also my Nana's 90th birthday. She passed away in October of 2005, but remains one of the most influential women in my life. It is no accident that I celebrate day 29 on her birthday.

I… Continue

Days 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29: The End is Only the Beginning.

DAY 24:

Today I knew I'd feel sort of badly. I have my doctor's appointment for my medical clearance for the summer and that included vaccines, which despite anything the information pamphlets tell me never leaves me feeling very good. I'm not sure if it's the live virii or the mental reaction to knowing about the live virii coursing around in my muscles and bloodstream. So, in my own small way, I gave my body for the summer. Plus, as I finished school in January and am starting… Continue

Day 9 at la casa

I spent a quiet day by myself at home, paying bills, cooking, gardening, and reading. It was 80 degrees and sunny. Mild breeze. I love days like this. I sat down to think about whether I had given anything at all today and surpised myself by coming up with a few things. I just paid my son's car insurance bill for the next 6 months. A big gift that he isn't even conscious of yet (but one day soon!) I gave my husband the gift of handling our finances yet again. He hasn't paid a bill in 2 years. I… Continue

Day 23-26 During the Giving Challenge, it's interesting how easy it is to say YES

At every tip jar opportunity, I gave. At every "would you like to Donate" request, I gave. So hopefully the teams at Starbucks, Greenlee's, Baskin Robbins (what, it was for the kids!), and Chipolte Grill will be a bit happier. Contributed again to Autism Speaks, and The March of Dimes.

I wrote an email to the San Jose Mercury News to tell them about this amazing challenge Cami has started.

Now the bigger ones...I bought my son a new phone. Now, this might be a little… Continue

29 DAYS - CREATED A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS

THROUGHOUT THESE 29 DAYS I DISCOVERED A BURIED LEVEL OF MY "SELF". BEING ABIT OF A CONTROL FREAK , AS I STARTED THIS PROJECT I MADE A LIST OF THINGS I WOULD DO/GIVE DURING THE CHALLENGE.....AND, AS ALWAYS, THE UNIVERSE HAD DIFFERENT IDEAS...OFTEN BEST LAID PLANS FAILED; BUT AS THE JOURNEY CONTINUED I BECAME JOYFULLY AWARE OF OPPORTUNITIES I WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN AWARE OF PREVIOUSLY...I EXPERIENCED A FOCUS ALLOWING ME TO SEE APPROPRIATE OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE AND I AM GREATFUL FOR THIS LIFE… Continue

Giving European style -through Day 28

Just checking in, I'm in Rome and our hotel has a laptop in the shared sitting room making it so easy to jump on and get caught up. I've been keeping track of most of my days in my journal, but as a recap...

- I've offered to take photos of people in order to ensure their vacation scrapbooks include everyone that was there. Mostly couples, but once a whole class of Italian school kids, the teacher was so happy!

- We picked up trash on the path to a castle on a hill in Varenna… Continue

Day 26

Today I gave a dollar to the woman and the dog next to the freeway exit. I've been wanting to give her some money for a while and today I was in the right lane to do it.

Day 6-8 Small everyday giving

I spent time with my family over the weekend, and I had a hard time deciding what actions I took that could be defined as giving. Here is what I came up with:

1) Gave my dad a stack of outdoorsy magazines thay my husband had finished

2) Gave my brother a free t-shirt that I had "won" from the Louisiana lotter when I was back in NOLA (He loves free t-shirts!)

3) Gave my mom several hours of uninterrupted girl time. We shopped for flowers and made dinner together, then I colored… Continue

Days 14-28

the past two weeks have been a flurry of activity, many opportunities to give and many moments of asking myself "what can i give today?" I have found that the faster i move the hardrer it is to be mindful of that question, but the more i slow down the easier it is to be open and flow with what the universe brings across my path as an opportunity to give. I have been able to give my time, my encouragement, my personal belongings, my smile, my heart, my soul. I have also found that I actually… Continue
