29-Day Giving Challenge

Genuine, wwt, welcomer's Blog – February 2010 Archive (18)

The End of February

One day at a store I saw a package of candy bars that reminded me of my close friend ... she and I used to have these candy bars all the time in Elementary school. I bought them that day, and this weekend I finally packaged some up and sent them to her.

A few days ago I attended a training on how to be an advocate for children ... I am not at all into politics and was told that I didn't have to be in order to be an advocate. Advocacy is simply about speaking up for what you believe… Continue

Cheerleading

The elementay school held a cheerleading program for the girls this week. Tonight all the little girls cheered at halftime at the basketball game. I had daycare kids in the group who had asked if I was going to come watch them ... which, of course, means I HAD to go : )

So my gift tonight was going over to the school, paying the $5 to get into the game, and cheering for my little cheerleaders. I even took time afterwards to go find them and tell them what a good job they'd done.

latest giving

I haven't been blogged lately ... for a few reasons ... 1) I have been super-busy, partly because of some giving, in addition to all my work-related stuff. 2) The giving lately has involved some things I don't want to share too many details on (sort of private matters)

So ... what CAN I say about my recent giving?

I'm looking out for children, fighting for them.

I've put in a lot of time and energy.

It's made for some very late nights and lack of sleep.

I've been… Continue

Bachelor's Pad

This bachelor's place was badly in need of some help. Today I came to the rescue. I'm talking about some serious cleaning: vacuuming, sweeping, folding and putting away clothes, scrubbing the floor, the stove, the microwave, cleaning the refrigerator, scrubbing the toilet, throwing things away ...

He told me, "I don't know how to clean."

This is something I can't understand. I asked what he meant, and he explained that when he tries to clean he tends to just keep moving things… Continue

Parent Night

How hard is it for parents to have a night out without the kids? With Valentine's Day this weekend, I figured a lot of parents would want a chance to go out ... so I held a parent night tonight. Free childcare for parents. They loved it. In fact, one set of parents sent all the kids and stayed home because they are never, just the two of them, home alone.

So ...

'Twas the night before Valentine's and all through my house;

Every creature was stirring, though I don't have a…

Take That to the Bank

Trying to be creative with my title ...

Saturday morning. Time to make my regular run to the Post Office and the bank. I took some valentines with me. I wrote who they were from and taped a heart pencil on each one, and I carried them with me for whoever I would run into. I gave one to the lady working at the Post Office and one to the bank teller who waited on me. It brought a chuckle from each of them. For some reason, I felt a little akward/self-conscious about these gifts. Were… Continue

Family Matters

So I went to meet with some family last night. There were concerns that needed to be discussed. We talked at length and I got home late. Still, with things so fresh in my mind I decide to do a few things in an effort to help with things. I made copies of some papers, researched a few things, gathered and organized some old information on things, and had all these things put together neatly and ready to go for my cousin to pick up today.

I think today went really smoothly, especially… Continue

One Year Marker

Today marks one year since I joined the 29 gifts challenge and also one year since I wrote and posted my very first blog. Happy anniversary to me!

I haven't technically completed 12 rounds yet though, as I took a few days between rounds. I'd call this Round 12 Day 12.

I've sort of come full circle ... returning to some of the valentine gives that I started out with when I first joined this challenge.

So does doing this challenge mean things have been sunny for… Continue

A Chicken With It's Head Cut Off

Yeah, that's me. I'm running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. So many things to do and not enough time ... I decided tonight I might have to choose between reading others' blog posts or writing a post, not enough time to do both. As you can tell, I've chosen to write a post : )

This challenge was in my mind for a good part of the day. It popped in strangely at lunch ... because I was reminded of a past post I'd written about being grateful when the kids didn't ask for… Continue

Never Enough Hours in the Day

Anyone else have that problem? There are so many things I need to do and so many things I want to do.

Right now I still want to do a blog, take a shower, make a phone call, finish the chapter in my book ... but then again, I also want to sleep. Maybe the rest will have to wait.

I'll just do a simple post.

Some things I gave today:

-baked heart-shaped cookies with the kids

-helped my brother fill out a form

-was flexible with a parent who needed their… Continue

On the Receiving End

School was two hours late due to snow. I took in extra kids this morning. I also let kids stay late tonight.

But today i want to focus more on the receiving end of things. There's a guy who's been going around town with his truck and clearning snow for people. I saw him over at my neighbors and next thing I knew he was clearing my driveway too! I even saw that he got stuck ... but somebody came to his rescue/pulled him out. : )

In addition to the cleared driveway I received some… Continue

I used to hope school would be late or closed ...

SNOW AND MORE SNOW

Last night before bed my brother was saying "I hope school is two hours late tomorrow." I blurted, "Don't say that!" Well, guess what? His school (tech. college) was running right on time this morning and the kids' school here was closed for the entire day. I suppose we were both thinking "oh, man," just like Swiper the Fox (you have to watch Dora to get that).

So ... my phone started ringing at 5:50 am ... with people wondering if they could bring their… Continue

SuperBowl

I'm letting brother use my TV (and my couch) to watch the SuperBowl. I even gave him some food. : )

Goody Bag

I decided to title this post "Goody Bag," not only because of the picture of the valentine's goody bags, but also because the post will sort of be a grab bag of giving.

Today seemed to be slow and non-productive, and tonight I was feeling a bit down. Non-productiveness does that to me, and I was also missing the two special little girls I was hoping to see today.

I made a bit of a turn-around with those feelings tonight though. Turning my mind to this challenge…

Visitors

I'm letting my brother and sister-in-law stay with me tonight. I made spaghetti and garlic bread for supper, and tonight we watched a movie. Good thing I had somebody to cook for or I wouldn't have eaten a "real" meal tonight. : )

Sweet and Simple

It was a long day today .... my first daycare family showed up at 5:45am (technically, 15 minutes before I open for the day, but I welcomed them with open arms ... literally, I opened my arms to receive a sleeping child). About 11 hours later, all my little clients were picked up for the day. Still, I had to wash dishes, sanitize some toys, do some work on the computer, take out the trash ....

Not so different than any other day really, but still a long day. So tonight I decided to treat… Continue

Self-forgiveness Again

Yes, we need to forgive ourselves for our shortcomings again and again. None of us are perfect, but sometimes it seemes I expect myself to be.

Today I am giving myself forgiveness for my impatience and frustration with the children. I am reminding myself that though I did snap at them many times and react to their behavior in less than ideal ways, I also did many good things for them too. Still, I hope tomorrow goes better. It was just a tough day all around; starting the second the alarm… Continue

Preschool

So I was thinking this could be a gift ... because of me a child got to preschool today. Her mom brought her to daycare fresh out of bed this morning, in her pajamas and still half-asleep. That's fine with me, but ... I looked at her mom and said "she does have school today." The mom said she didn't have school. I was sure she did, but I checked the preschool calendar anyway and informed mom that she did indeed have school. The mom seemed flustered, saying I guess I'll have to come get her… Continue
