pizza and small stuff

My gift yesterday was a to bring my grandmother a slice of her favorite pizza. I was coming home late and decided to pick up a couple slices. I remembered she really enjoys this pizza. I dropped off a piece for her to enjoy for lunch the next day.
Today I am in the zone...I am going to give a lot of small gifts. I started by bringing my sister, who is pregnant and has a sweet tooth, a yummy dessert. My wife made really good brownies that I knew Meredith would love.
Another gift…

Gift 3: spreading the word

Today I led a discussion group on "29 Gifts" with students at my high school. The students chose to read the book for their summer reading assignment.
The discussion went well and the kids came up with some great questions and dialogue.
I asked the students if anyone had tried the 29 day giving challenge. No one in the group had tried it as of yet. I was shocked, so I spent some time telling them all the positive reasons for doing the challenge. We discussed my first 29 day…

Day 30 listening

Today I listened to my wife. This might sound easy or simple, but I really listened. I did not jump in, or give an opinion...I just listened. I could tell that she welcomed that, and later in the evening, I felt she listened to me.

I was an active listener to her thoughts about work and the world. I notice that I tend to not be a good listener. I often form ideas when someone is speaking and this is not true listening. This is something I will continue to work on.

Day 29: Meredith

Today I called my sister on my way home from work just to check in with her and see how things were going. She is getting married this summer and moving into a new house-so things are pretty busy for her right now. I let her know that I would help her move and that we could assist in anything they need help with for the wedding. It was nice to talk to her.

Day 28: Soup

Mondays are sometimes crazy. I got home a little early from work and made a nice tortellini soup for the family. They both really enjoyed it and it was a nice warm meal on a chilly day. I think I will keep this recipe around and make it again.

Day 27: prayers

Church today was so amazing! My gift today was to say a lot of prayers for family and friends...It also made me realize that I need to get back to prayer each and every day.

Day 26: sleep

I gave the gift of rest to my wife. She seemed like she needed some extra rest, so I quietly got Jackson and went downstairs. She came down a few hours later feeling and looking refreshed. It was a simple but good give.

Day 25: Snowman

Today was a snow day for us! Jackson and I made good use of the day. After we played with toys, colored, and watched some movies-it was time to hit the snow. We fooled around for awhile and threw some snowballs before deciding to make a snowman.

After we got the base and body we made the head. It was then time for Jackson to give the snowman some features. He gave it a real carrot nose, a corncob pipe for the mouth, two eyes made out of coal, a blue scarf and two sticks for…

Day 24: check on nan

Today it was forecast that we would get a lot of snow over the next few days. I called to check on my grandmother to see if she needed anything before the strorm hit. She was happy to know that I was thinking of her but she declined.

It turns out that she had everything she needed and she was just hoping that she didn't lose power.

Day 23: cleaning up

Our house became a disaster area when we all got sick. Everything was left around since we had zero energy. My wife felt well enough to go to work, so I stayed home with Jackson, who was still not himself. As we spent the day together, I took a lot of time to clean and sanitize everything I could. I also washed all the bedding and did some laundry. My wife was very pleased when she came home from work.

Day 22: Helping out

My give today was to help make life easy for my wife and son. We were all really sick. After getting home from the basketball game all of us ended up getting the flu. In fact within about two hours-we were all getting sick. It really hit us hard. We did not sleep at all last night.

Day 20 and Day 21: Lunch and basketball

Day 20: Today I gave the gift of taking the family to the diner for lunch. We had a nice meal together and my son Jackson ordered me a chocolate milk so I could drink the same thing he was drinking. It was a day when we were not in a hurry and we just enjoyed the time together. We even had dessert!

Day 21: I decided to take my parents and my family to a local college basketball game. The best part about this give was that when I went to pay for the tickets, the woman in the…

Day 19: church for nan and gifts in return

My day was quite busy but today I made time to take my nan to church for the fish dinner. She always likes to go to eat and chat with her friends. She was so happy that I took her.

To show her gratitude, she made me some meatballs- my favorite!

After I dropped her off I went to buy tickets to a basketball game that is a few days away. The women selling the tickets gave me 4 and told me not to worry about paying. She gave me 4 tickets out of the kindness of her heart.

Day 18: a ride

My nan has not drove a car in years because of her vision. I called and said that I would pick her up today and take her to get her hair done. She often has to ask a family member or neighbor and I know she feels bad asking.
Today she did not have to ask anyone...

Day 17: arts and crafts

My son has been really into drawing, coloring and cutting things out lately. I decided to bring home some ideas and supplies for projects we could do together. On this day we made an elephant and colored and cut out tools. We both had a great time!

Day 14 & 15

Day 14 was Valentines Day. Today I give to my wife Heather. I gave her a beautiful heart ring. I actually picked the correct size! She said she loved it and that she will wear it everyday.

Day 15: I gave to my son today. He is growing so much, so we decided to get him a lot of new clothes for the upcoming Spring...he will look so cute in all the new shirts and pants!

Day 12 & 13

Day 12 was a long day...I gave by driving 2 hours to the beach to help my sister and her fiancé move. I wanted to be there the night before so that we could get an early start on the moving. We all pitched in and got it all done.
Day 13 was a day I gave to my wife's friend Carley. Carley really helped out when my wife was sick a few weeks ago. I got her a starbucks gift card to let her know how grateful I was for helping. She enjoyed the gift and accepted the gift with a smile.

Day 11: time in the snow

My give for the day was time. Today I spent a lot of time just playing in the snow with my wife and son. I skipped my daily workout and instead got a good workout throwing snowballs and sledding. We all had a great time. I love winter and I love snow days!

Day 9 and 10: a card and French toast

Yesterday I sent out a birthday card to a very important person. Father Steve has done so much to help my family over the years. He is a priest that is very close to us. With the recent death of my cousin, life has been especially tough on my grandmother and my aunt.

Father Steve has been there to help with the viewing and funeral and to comfort my family.

My give for yesterday was to write out a nice birthday card to him and send it out. He deserves so much more but I know he will… Continue
