Share the love Day 9..."freely you have recieved...freely give..."

Today I passed a familiar street corner on the way to the store.... Every time I pass it there is someone homeless on the corner who is asking for help. In the past I've always been judge mental or too afraid to give because I was broke. Today was different though. Today, I felt compelled to give to the man on the corner with the long beard and the missing arm. He held a sign that said " Help needed...anything will do." At first I tried to ignore this compulsion to give, but as I drove out of… Continue

Day 8

Sat down on day 8 with my two year old niece and helped her make a card for her mom out of Red and Green construction paper. We cut out a red paper heart, and a green Christmas tree to glue on the back. Then I held her little hand to steady the pen as we wrote the to and from. I watched her adorable little cheeks full of concentration and her little tongue sticking out of her mouth as she tried to draw her mommy and then some presents under the tree. Periodiocally she would look at me with… Continue

Day 7 " Encouragement"

Went to Fed EX on Day 7 to make some copies of my resume. I noticed that the workers were extremely professional. I commented each one generously on their helpfulness and on the professional atmosphere of the store. I really struggled on this day with whether I actually gave or not, but I realized that I actually gave them the gift of encouragement, bringing a tiny bit of sunshine into their workplace :). I also made it a point to smile at others today...to find something I genuinely liked and… Continue

Day 6

Got a pile of my nieces favorite little books and read to her for an hour. J. left to go back to the Bronx. Before she left we all had dinner; afterwards I cleaned all of the dishes. I have this curling iron J. used last time she was here that she loved, so I gave it to her as a gift. She was excited and grateful...but unfortunately couldn't fit it in her suitcase, so I gave her a big bear hug instead.

Day 5

Cleaned my sister's house for her again. Our friend J. was visiting from the Bronx, so I stayed up with her and my sister. Gave them both back to back massages. They were so grateful. Day five.

Day 4

Cleaned my sister's living room, dining room, and kitchen on day four and did some of her laundry for her. Lit a bunch of candles to welcome her when she got home, then I wrote a letter to my Grandfather and slipped a packet of breakfast tea in the envelope. Dia Cuatro.:)

The Gift of Understanding..."Day 3"

Over the past year I have been attending a weekly support group in downtown Seattle. I have made several friends in this group among which I have found a strong connection. I have been to many church "buildings"...but this particular group of people I consider my real church...even though we all have different spiritual beliefs we all share a willingness to be vulnerable and the same wonderful sense of humor. Star ( we are going to call her that for the sake of anonymity) was one of those… Continue

Day Two

This morning I woke up and looked at my dog lying on the couch. He is a 10 year old golden retriever named Cobi....He looked up at me with big velvety brown eyes and sighed. It occurred to me that I hadn't played with him in quite some time. Most dogs play fetch. My dog plays " keepaway". He brings you his favorite stuffed animal and lays it at your feet silently asking you to throw it so he can go retrieve it. If you didn't know my dog you would probably expect him to bring it back and then… Continue

Accumulating Positives..."Start Small..." Day One

I have an adorable curly haired pink cheeked niece who is my shadow. I babysit for her every week for two hours, and to be honest even though I love her dearly and there is nothing in the world like being an aunt, I'm usually in a hurry to babysit and get out of there on those days because I have a world of other things to take care of. Yesterday was one of those ambiguous days, gray, cloudy, nothing I wasn't used to but just one of those days that had me second guessing my emotions. I woke up… Continue

Act the way you want to feel...

There is this quote that I stumbled across in a book once that talked about how when we don't feel the way we want to act, we should act the way we want to feel, and the feeling will soon follow. It is a cloudy day in Western Washington and so begins my journey to bring sunshine into the world! A great deal of people in the northwest suffer from a vitamin D deficiency because we get so little sunshine here; this deficiency contributes to S.A.D. or what is known as seasonal affective disorder,… Continue
