29-Day Giving Challenge

Resurrection

It's been so long since I posted anything, That does not mean that the spirit hasn't thumped, crashed, eased, prodded or "thwaped" me in the direction of giving. My days are filled with servitude for my family, my job, my church. All purposeful yet the one person I neglect is myself. How does that happen? So in blogging and in giving I hear my voice. Sometimes I think she is long forgotten. Lying dormant until the spirit with all it's crashing, prodding and thwaping snaps her awake for just a… Continue

The Spirit of Giving When it's an Economic Challenge

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2009/january/29.80.html

Phillip Yancey is an amazing writer first, Christian second. He is one of my favorite spiritual authors along with Annie Lamont.

I read this a few weeks ago. This is my gift for the day.. to you.

Oh..if you think life is hard.. pick up a copy of "Traveling Mercies" by Annie Lamont. I dare you to not come out unchanged.

Blessings

January 6, 2009 - What is Giving Anyway and Why I write about it!

I feel like I’ve abandoned this but in reality I haven’t. The writing process became burdensome over the holidays. It was just one more thing to do. What I realize now in retrospect is that writing solidifies the choice I’ve made to give.

I was reading Dickens “A Christmas Carol” last night. I got to the part where the two businessmen come to “Scrooge and Marley” to request a donation from Scrooge. I realize that it was a protest writing for Dickens, but how true those words seem to… Continue

Santa's Elves and the Rookies

It's been a trying week. The power went out in New England on December 11th and in my home it came on today. There are so many without power. Living in the 18th century is lovely for a day or so, but prolonged periods are really not so satisfying. As my husband would say, "It would not have been a horrible experience if we had 18th century expectations." Well, we don't! No running water, a flooded basement, a stomach virus, a whooping 48 degrees in my kitchen in the morning. and no way to take… Continue

How do you start over when you really feel that in some ways you do/have been giving..

I like anonymity, I guess that is why I like the 29days so much. You can give just to give and not expect or want attention for it. This week I bought flowers for our church for Sunday. The flowers were in honor of Beth. She is the mom to 3 of my 4 girls. She died of breast cancer much too early in her life. To honor a spirit, I can't imagine doing something in their name to a person in need I asked the church to find someone who was in need of a hug, and give them the flowers. We decided that… Continue

Abundance vs Overwhelming Blight of Earth Affairs

The word abundance is associated with harvest in my minds eye. I see tables overflowing, the earth green and renewed even as the leaves, knowing that they are dying, go out with a blaze of color. I love the light in October. Robert Frost's poem "There is a Certain Slant of Light" resonates with me.

September and October; the fading time. The light gets shorter, the nights grow cooler and the air, pregnant with the smell of lilies is replaced with the scent of wet decaying leaves. I… Continue

Friday, June 6, 2008

I've decided to stop trying so hard to find opportunities to give and just put my faith in God and what's around me. So as I sat in line at Dunkin Donuts for my coffee and a bagel for Cole, I decided that the car behind me, for no apparent reason other than it was there, was going to have it's breakfast on me.

I ordered, pulled up to the window and told the cashier I wanted to pay for the car behind me. Cole then asked, "Why are you paying for that guy?" I introduced him to the 29… Continue

The Bigger Picture

Without Doubt there can be no faith and in my doubt I approached our HR manager about forming an employee committee to discuss recycling on a bigger scale for our company (we don't recycle paper!) Our parent company newsletter is littered with how this part of the company did this for charity or a non-profit. We have nothing. A couple of years ago I put a list of items needed for "Any Soldier" and had them shipped off to Iraq but that was like pulling teeth to get organized. I don't get it.… Continue

Day 2 - June 4th

A co-worker has been trying to introduce more protein into her diet. I brought her a bag of pasta I brought from Trader Joes. It's Multigram with Flaxseed. It's got 8 grams of protein, fiber and Omega 3. She's a pasta addict and I felt this was a good middle of the road solution for her.

I still want to do something amazing... I keep looking for random acts of kindness and giving. They haven't "Presented" themselves as of yet.

June 3, 2008

My first day and I have been making a list of things to buy from Oriental Trading company for my summer Sunday School kids. I think that tomorrow I'll buy an extra Zyrtec bottle for Mrs Glenn at Cole's school. She's such a loving soul. I'm trying to decide on what to do as something nice for my co-workers. Maybe I'll buy muffins this week. Today I bought candy, but I haven't put it out yet. It got too busy!
