A quick summary to wrap up cycle 18 and beginning cycle 19

Day 21 (x18): I cuddled with my husband for fifteen minutes. It's remarkable that this was the most concentrated time we've spent together is quite a while. We're both so busy. His voice over career is booming so he's gone all the time. And then there's my life with the 29 Gifts book. I spend about 2 hours a day (the max I can manage to work in a day) doing press or giving to the challenge in other ways and then I'm wiped out and need to lay down and rest. I'm usually asleep before Mark gets hom… Continue

Day 20 (x18): Letting myself be held

Keeping with my theme to give to my husband each day for the rest of this cycle, I allowed him to let me cry in his arms for a long time when I found out that my grandmother is sick with congestive heart failure. It is 3:29 am here in Hollywood right now and I have been bawling like a baby since about 7 pm. Mark and I have been so physically distant from one another for so long now -- several months, mostly since the final push on writing the 29 Gifts book and all of the publicity that is in th… Continue

Day 19 (X18): Love Bar

Mark and I had a rough and somewhat hostile therapy session today, but I kept to my commitment to give a gift a day to him through the rest of this cycle. Today's gift -- a Love Bar -- a raw chocolate bar. Being married is hard.

Days 5-17 (X18): The dangers of overgiving have hit home for me

Mbali warned me in the beginning of the project to watch out for the tendency to overgive and I think in the past few weeks I have fallen into this pattern. "Giving does not mean giving so much that you feel depleated or deprive yourself of the things you need for basic survival," warned Mbali. "In fact overgiving, is a red flag that you are operating from the energy of scarcity rather than abundance." I think my efforts to help the friend I've mentioned a few times find housing and employment… Continue

Day 4: (X18) -- Couch to Crash on and Unveiling something new at 29 Gifts (our new meditation teleclasses)

I helped my friend Kris with her resume and some job applications and allowed her to crash on our couch in my office tonight because it's so hot out and the apartment she's living in temporarily doesn't have air conditioning. Tomorrow I'll be helping her move her things to another friend's place, where she'll be able to stay for the month of September while she finds a new job and gets her feet on the ground. I also gave time to the 29 Gifts movement by doing an on-camera interview that will be… Continue

Day 3 (x18): Reading for Mbali

I read the prologue of Mbali's book that she has begun to write and then called her to rave about it. She is so poetic and her story is begging to be told. I know I can't wait to buy her book. She's working on the proposal now so I offered a little guidance on how to write a proposal that will sell. I predict she won't have much trouble finding a publisher to make it happen. Continue

Days 1-2 (x18): Baby Welcome Wagon

I spent the first day of cycle 18 shopping for things for a baby shower I threw for my friend Christal on Day 2 of cycle 18 (August 30). I made a lot of yummy healthy food and a few of us sat around for a couple of hours at my place wishing Christal lots of luck and happiness with her new little boy, who is scheduled to arrive in a month or so. This give was actually a stretch for me because I find it hard to be around pregnant women and small children because I want one of my own so badly and i… Continue

Wrapping up cycle 17: List 'o Gifts

This is going to be one of my list-like catch-up posts to get at least the basics down about my gives during round 17 Day 10 (x17) Spa Day for Dr Kim You’ve all heard me rave about my acupuncturist, Dr. Jane Kim. She’s one of the great healers who helped me get back on my feet a year and a half ago. Dr. Kim event treated me for free for the first several months. I’ve paid her back monetarily for the treatment she’s given me, b… Continue

Day 9 (x17): Compassion and a bottle of booze

Today (Aug 8, 1009) I was at the corner store buying a bottle of water. I was standing in line behind a woman who reeked of alcohol and there was a long line of impatient people behind me. The woman at the front of the line was obviously in alcohol withdrawal and was showing the beginning sig… Continue

Days 1-8 (X17): Friendship, Advice, and Flowers

Day 1 (x17): My good friend Rocio from San Francisco turned up in LA with no notice so I took the day off and spent some quality friend time with her. Day 2 (X17): I helped my friend who started holistichealingguide.com connect with a publicist so they can get the word out to the world about their awesome project. Days 3-8 (x17): I b… Continue

Wrapping up Giving Rounds 15 and 16: Small offerings + my first photo shoot for a major magazine

Wow. I'm shocked that I haven't made a blog post since June 23rd. I'm really not surprised because I spent the last week of June and all of July collaborating with another fantastic editor/writer to pound out the rewrite for the book. My gives during that timeframe were mostly little things like doing dishes, doing laundry, cooking meals and making an attempt to help out with little chores around the house because my husband usually takes on all of those duties in our household. I'm happy to sa… Continue

Gifts 11-21 (X15): Choosing FAITH over FEAR

I feel heavy-hearted tonight because I just did my accounting and realized that 29 Gifts doesn't have enough money in our coffers to cover our July expenses. We primarily rely on our members to Play Gift Tag and chip in a voluntary membership fee. I know money is tight out there for all of us, so I certainly don't take it personally that we are so far away from our goal of raising $1,500 through the Gift Tag Game b… Continue

Days 4-10 (X15): Five good gifts

Days 4 & 5 (X15): Sometimes I think I missed my calling and should have been an interior decorator. I have a knack for putting a room together--especially on a budget. I put this gift to use over the weekend and helped my friend George furnish his new apartment. We made stops at two stores and got everything he needed, right down to the curtains. I think the only things left on the list are to get a few throw pillows, a desk and a butcher block for his kitchen. We picked all of those things… Continue

What stops you from sharing your gifts with the world?

I have been on an emotional roller coaster for some time now. The highs are very high. There are lots of exciting things going on. The book is already getting some media buzz and people are pre-ordering on Amazon because there's a 30% discount on pre-orders right now. (Thanks if you've bought one, by the way). Our movement is now 4,357 givers… Continue

Day 3 (X15): Shoes for those in need at Soles4Souls.org

I got my giving tip from DarynKagan.com today. Just donated $20 to Soles4Souls, which will provide 10 pairs of shoes to people who usually have to go barefoot all the time. When I was traveling in India several years ago I was blown away by the number of people -- especially children -- who had no shoes. Not even a single pair of flip fl… Continue

Day 2 (X15): Magic Poop Pills

I can't believe I'm about to share this because it's a bit personal and embarrassing, but what the heck. Constipation tends to be a major problem for people with MS, including myself. It's not uncommon for me to go several days without a bowel movement. Obviously this is far from comfortable. I get these magic herbal poop pills from my acupuncturist that always give me relief really fast without the negative effects of taking laxatives or using glycerine suppositories. My good friend Lauri also… Continue

Day 1: (X15) A Brief Respite + Catching Up

Wow. I can't believe the revised manuscript has been delivered to the publisher in New York. My give every day for the past month or so (what I guess would be cycle 14 for me while I was on hiatus from the site) has been to give a bit of mind space and time to help our community grow by finishing the manuscript. Thank God, I had a lot of help from a freelance development editor my publisher hired. There is no way I could have completed the workload on time by myself. I'm happy to say tha… Continue

On Hiatus

I've had a pretty chaotic couple of weeks lately. I'm so busy with everything that's been happening. First I witnessed the car wreck, then my cat Abu passed away, my sister and her children came for a vacation at Disney, then we moved into a beautiful new condo at the foot of the Hollywood Hills, and last but not least, I received the Editor's notes on the 29Gifts book. She offered some really good insights, and I appreciate all of her suggestions, and agree with them. It's all good advice. But… Continue

Day 15 (X13): Making Peace, Get Well and Birthday Gift

After four days of prayer, reflection and processing... I have made peace with witnessing Tuesday's accident. I'm sure there will be things that will restimulate the trauma for me sometimes. I still cringe when I hear car horns honk, and I have yet to be able to walk by the corner again... not even to go build an altar there like I had hoped to do the day after the incident. Thanks to all of you who have commente… Continue

Day 14 (X13): Prayers and Service

Thank you for your well wishes and prayers the past two days. I discovered last night that the mother of the man I tried to help during tuesday's accident was one of the female victims who died in the accident. I distinctly recall feeling a connection to a woman spirit during the incident who seemed to want me to stay by the man's side. She didn't want him to be alone. I believe she is also the one who compelled… Continue
