Once upon a time there was a woman who was very proud of being big and strong. Every morning she would look in the mirror and think "Look how big and strong I am. I'm the biggest, strongest woman in this town. Maybe I'm the biggest strongest woman in the whole world."
The Big Strong Woman loved to help people. She would help them carry the heaviest loads and reach up to the highest places for them. Every night she lay in bed and thought about how many people she had helped that day and how much they must love her.
Then one day a wicked fairy came along. I don't know what the Big Strong Woman said or did, but she managed to offend the wicked fairy. That's not a surprise - wicked fairies are notoriously easy to offend. The wicked fairy waved her wand and cast a spell - and the Big Strong Woman shrank and shrank and got weaker and weaker until she was as small and weak as a kitten.
For days she did nothing but sit in her house. She didn't know what to do. If she couldn't carry the heaviest loads and reach up to the highest places, nobody would love her any more.
One evening another fairy appeared. This fairy shimmered and sparkled and offered to help.
"Can you make me big and strong again?" the Woman asked, feeling hopeful for the first time in days.
"No, I can't do that", the fairy replied "But I think I can make you happier". And she pulled out a small bag. "This bag is full of fairy dust", she told the Woman. "Every day for the next 29 days, take out some fairy dust and give it to someone else who needs it."
So that's what the Woman did. Every day she opened the bag, and there was some fairy dust. Some days she gave it to people she loved, some days to strangers, some days she blew it far away on the wind to people she hadn't even met. And even if she emptied the bag one day, when she looked the next day, there was more dust.
At the end of the 29 days, the fairy reappeared. "Well?" she asked.
"Well", said the Woman. "I'm still as small and weak as a kitten, but I have learned that even when you feel small and weak you can still make people happy. Even if you can only give little things, even when you can't carry the heaviest loads and reach the highest places, people will still love you.
So can I have some more fairy dust, please?"
And the fairy smiled. "That's the magic", she said. "You don't need my fairy dust any more. Look in your own pocket, and you will find your own fairy dust".
And that's exactly what happened.
Thank you, Cami. This has been a great place to spend time. I have chemo tomorrow (hopefully) and plan to take a break from the computer for a while, but I will be back.
