29-Day Giving Challenge

this evening an old friend of mine from high school called, the one whose husband died last month. she was telling me that she had gotten a phone call from another friend we had back in the day that she had not heard from in 30 years. from there we started reminiscing about our teen years and the silly things we did then. it was very enjoyable to remember when we were young and carefree. after a while, she asked me how long it had been since my sister died. i told her it has been 4 years. she wanted to know if i still thought about her and how long it took me to get "back to normal". i told her that i think of her every day, but now most of the time when i think of her it makes me smile. i also told her that i knew her husband loved her and just because she can't see him doesn't mean he's left her, that love does not die. it seemed to help her, at least i hope it did.

Gives: a listening ear and a small measure of comfort.

Receives: smiles and memories. also, feeling needed.

Dawn,
You must have been a great comfort to your friend. She seems to have trusted you with a very important question and you answered her with compassion.

You shared some deep truths with your friend. You comforted, laughed with and consoled her. Bless you for being such a good and loving friend.

that call sounds like a wonderful give AND receive

she asked how long it took you to "get back to normal" .... I think when things like this happen we have to find a new normal (one where we can smile and remember them is good)

Dawn I really do think that of all the gifts we can give, nothing takes the place of just being there for someone. Especially at a difficult time in their life. I am glad you could be a source of comfort for your old friend, and that it made you feel good too. :)
