Today Katie and I went to the Changing Hands Book Store, by far my favorite place thus far in all of Arizona! A little back ground story, Changing Hands was the bookstore where I bought the 29 Gifts book, on my visit here before I even thought that it was a possibility that I would be moving here. I saw Cami Walker's book on my way to the check out corner, swapping the book for one that I had in my hand at the last minute.
When Katie and I decided to go today I thought that it would be fitting to use the store, and its multitudes of wonderful books, to spread the 29 gifts message. We hadn't planned ahead to go there, so my gift had to thought of and created at the last minute. I decided to make 29 gifts bookmarks out of recycled materials that I had in my nice little craft basket. (I made 6 in all)
The Front had the 29gift.org web site hand written and the red tag reads, "Join the world wide revival of the giving movement". The back of each had a left over sticker from my "Recycled Roses" give, containing a short Buddhist prayer, which read,
"Dear Stranger,
May your love flow outward through the universe,
To it's height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity"
I took these with me to Changing Hands and discreetly placed them at either the 29th page or the 29th chapter of various books. The bookmarks went into bestsellers, and those that had missed the cute; into sparkling new books, and into those with loving wear and a sticker on their spine; into new releases and the newly discounted. I am excited for them to be discovered, like some wonderful landmine of hope waiting to be triggered. While I am sure that some people will either be confused or tuned out maybe just one will be curious and find something that changes their lives as profoundly as this movement has affected mine.
