Today my gift was of my time. This is my first year volunteering for the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival. My brother is one of the founders and this is the 6th year it has been going on. The story goes that one New Years Eve my brother and a friend were discussing how Salem doesn't really have to much live, outdoor, free music happening. So they decided to do something about it. Donations are collected - merchandise is sold...all proceeds go to the Salem Public schools music department.
This weekend was the big show.
I was not looking forward to it. I volunteered both Saturday and Sunday for about 6 hours each day. It was really quite a big commitment.
But I have to say that I had a blast. The music was spectacular. The park is on the Salem Harbor so the scenery was also spectacular and the weather could not have been nicer.
I met some great people. I am ready to do it again next year.
So, all in all, I am so glad I did it and it was a great thing for me to give away.
I was thinking that it wouldn't really count as a "gift" but then I remembered that time is the best thing you can give away. It is priceless-can't be replaced or returned or exchanged. Once it's gone that's it - you can't get any more of it.
So, I figure my time volunteering certainly does count as a gift.
Tomorrow I start at a new job. My friend helped me get it and I am so grateful because I have searched and searched and found nothing on my own.
I know he loves my lasagna and I made a big batch of it yesterday so I am going to bring in a plate for him to thank him.
He lives alone and doesn't do much cooking.
That will be my 3rd gift.
This is getting fun!
