29-Day Giving Challenge

Day 4 was a tough day for me. I really didn't know what to do for a gift yesterday. I started feeling as though I HAD to give instead of being excited and wanting to give. I went to the Hallmark store thinking I would buy a "just because" card for a friend. But I became resentful while I was browsing through the cards. This wasn't the way I imagined feeling about giving. And giving a gift because I feel like I have to isn't the way this is supposed to be. I left the store feeling defeated.

Awhile later I waited for my 6 year old to get out of school. He was excited to tell me about a 5th grade student who was chosen to the the principal today. One of the things this student wanted to do as principal was give a lollipop to every student. Aidan couldn't wait to eat that lollipop. The second we walked in the door he ripped off the wrapper. His younger brother woke up from his nap to see Aidan putting the lollipop in his mouth. He got a huge smile on his face and asked if Aidan had brought a pop home for him too. I could tell by the look on Aidan's face that he felt so bad for his little brother. He said to him, "No bud- I got this at school. But here you can have it if you would like it." Connor was so excited. The expression on his face was priceless. I praised Aidan for doing such a nice thing. He said, "I know mommy- but I'm kind of sad now. I really wanted that lollipop." I started thinking quickly about what I could do for Aidan. I usually don't allow the kids to play video games. Especially not on school days. So I told him that it would be ok for him to play 15 mins. of a game. That news was received with a huge hug that almost knocked me off my feet. When 15 minutes had gone by, I took a minute to look at Aidan (and Connor.) They were having such a great time. Laughing away together as they played a monster truck game. I sat down next to them on the floor and was given a try at driving the truck. So that was how we spent the rest of the afternoon. A perfect gift for Day 4!!

Love it!
I'm glad you left the card store ... we shouldn't give cards or "gifts" because we feel we have to, only when we feel we want to
