Despite my temporary disability (cast on my left foot, walking on crutches), my life has gotten amazingly busy! I have been giving out home made cookies through the days, at offices I visit or to people who come to our house. What a treat for me to see the surprise and delight at receiving something thoughtfully made. On day 5 I gave the gift of time and attention to my mom, whom I have not always gotten along with. I spent an entire day with her... making cookies! (that seems to be the theme for December). Funny thing was that the next day I got an email from her, thanking me for the gift of time - I never revealed that that was my intention :-)
On day 6 I went to our local farmer's market with my husband, and thanked all the vendors who had put their time and lovingly made items on display for purchasers each week since June. This was the last farmer's market of the season - a sad day for me in a way - I look forward to the wonderful community of vendors and customers that congregate there each week. One of the vendors has a struggling bakery, which we love and try to frequent when in town. I gave her the gift of my experience and time to help her with a loan application.
My leg continues to heal and I expect to be walking by January. I see the benefits of giving every day: through my own mood, my ability to be delighted at things I haven't noticed before. I feel content, despite this crazy season of consumer gluttony.
Happy Sunday everyone -

Wonderful gifts, and I'm glad you're seeing the benefits, too. (What you said about your mother reminds me of Ram Dass's line, "If you think you're enlightened, spend a week with your family." - Awesome that you were able to spend that time with her). It's funny how themes emerge. "Cookies" is definitely a cool one! (My first round was along the lines of "leaving inspiring notes in public washrooms" - LOL).

Comment by Catherine Callan on December 18, 2011 at 11:47am Thanks Ann, but I'm not amazing :-) all of this has not been hard to do - I find it's just thinking about giving something at the right time to do it. remembering that I'm doing the giving challenge in the morning helps a lot, too.
You are amazing! You continue giving such loving, caring gifts even while you are recovering from your temporary disability. I am so glad you are healing and hope that your foot will soon be completely healed.
