Gift 13 - Email to relatives living in France

I have to admit that today I was wondering what an earth I was going to give, I was feeling flat, tired, and fed up about my knee, and also the bone in my foot that I broke last year was giving me trouble too.  Shawn was playing around with the video feature of our camera, and he recorded me doing my PT rehab exercises, my face expression says it all, ‘I’m tired of being pain’.

I wanted to reach out to my more distant relatives, so I sent an email to my Grandparents living in France to tell them I was thinking of them, and telling them how much I would like for them to one day meet my husband Shawn, who unfortunately they have not had the opportunity to meet yet, despite the fact that we have been married for 5 years.

Gift 14 – easing the workload for my boss

This morning I felt that I reached rock bottom with my knee pain, I decided to go to the gym before work to lift some weights to at least work on my upper body strength, I didn’t want to lift cold, so I decided to do a 5-minute warm up on the elliptical machine, after 3 minutes I had to stop due to the pain in my knee.  For someone who 6 months ago was biking 200 miles a week, and running 30 miles a week this almost indicated to me that I would never run again.  I lifted some weights then got in the car to go to work, and literally cried on the way to work, not from the pain but from frustration.

It was a busy day at work, as all of our techs either were on vacation or had school, so me, my PT assistant, and boss were really stretched rather thin.  Despite being drastically behind on paperwork, I took one of my boss’s new patients to save him some evaluation and paperwork time.  This was my gift for the day.

I was tired and dejected as I left work for my appointment with Rob my PT.  When I walked into the clinic he could see in my face my frustration and he knew I needed to run again.  For 1.5 hours he worked with me correcting my biomechanics, massaging soft tissue, giving me exercises to work on hip control and my patella tracking.  He then put heat and electrical stimulation through the knee joint to calm the nerves there, and then told me to get on the treadmill.  I was nervous about trying to run, it has been 3 months since I have been able to walk without pain let alone run.  I got onto the treadmill and Rob put it on an incline for me to take some of the stress off my knee joint, he told me to focus on the biomechanical things we had been practicing, and so I began to run, and believe it or not I did not have any pain, some mild discomfort but nothing like the pain I have been having.  I ran for 15 minutes, I kept expecting the pain to show up but it never did.  I started this day feeling like I would never run again, and here I was running, only for 15 minutes, but it gave me a glimmer of hope, just maybe, just maybe I am on the mend.  It seems like the good karma I have been trying to spread is coming back to me.

Gift 15- an afternoon of family time

This morning I helped my hubby with chores, we worked as a team so that I could spend the afternoon with my parents and dogs, and he could spend the afternoon working on his jeep.  It was raining and muddy out today and my gift of the day is to the dogs, Mum and I took them for an extra long walk where they swam in the puddles and frolicked in the mud, they had a blast.  I got to spend the whole afternoon with my Mum who I don’t see very often, and the evening with my parents and my hubby.  There is no time better spent than time spent with family.
