Friday 15th April
Gift 21 – free PT
Mum called me today saying she had just sustained a running injury, she wasn’t expecting me to do anything about it – I was some 100 miles away at the time, but I realized that I could meet her that evening as I was going to be driving out to stay at Lake Pleasant to volunteer at a triathlon race the next day, not too far from where she was at. So in the evening we met up and I was able to treat her injury.
Mum subsequently reported feeling a whole lot better the next morning.
Saturday 16th April
Gift 22 – volunteering at The Phoenix Triathlon
Not being able to race myself due to my knee problems the next best thing to me was to give back to the sport. From 5am until 12 noon I helped make sure The Phoenix Triathlon ran smoothly, handing out race numbers, body marking people, laying out cones and course markings, handing out water at aid stations, and breaking down the course at the conclusion of the event.
Sunday 17th April
Gift 23 – bike maintenance and ride
A gift to my bikes today, I cleaned and maintained them so that they could be in the best working order possible, best of all I went on a bike ride after my hard work – and guess what, no knee pain. Things are looking up.
Monday 18th April
Gift 24- dinner
This evening I made dinner for my husband and I, it was actually my husband’s turn to cook, but he got in late from work so I decided to do his dinner duty for my gift of the day.
Tuesday 19th April
Gift 25 – gift of forgiveness
The previous day at work I’d felt some frustrations with recent staff changes, and certain managerial decisions and points that had arose. I could have continued to be cross and upset at management, and continued to have taken things personally, but I decided to forgive instead. Subsequently, all the staff at work had a better day.
Wednesday 20th April
Gift 26 – gift of advice for possible PT student
My gift today was unexpected, the receptionist at the gym found out that I was a PT and he himself is interested in applying to PT school. So I took the time to give him some advice about how best to go about being accepted into PT school.
Thursday 21st April
Gift 27 – PT for a co-worker
Today was another day of using my hands for my gift, a rather common theme in my 29 days of giving. A co-worker had been experiencing some neck tension and pain, and I took some time before leaving work for the day to do some work on her neck.
Friday 22nd April
Gift 28 – gift of listening
Sometimes with Physical Therapy it can be hard to help someone physically, especially someone who has been in chronic pain for many years, but sometimes they just need the gift of someone listening to them and hearing them out, that was my gift for today.
Saturday 23rd April
Gift 29 – groomed coats, clean ears, and clear teeth for my dogs
A gift to my pseudo kids today, my lab and golden retriever both got their coats brushed, and ears and teeth cleaned. They liked the coat brushing, my Golden Retriever didn’t think too much of the tooth brushing, and tried to eat the toothbrush, but on the whole they appreciated the loving care I gave them.
This concludes my 29 days of giving, what did I learn during my 29-days, I learned that giving is fun, and that there are always opportunities in life to give. I’ve probably known this all along, but this period of giving reinforced it, when you give, the good karma will come back to you. I started this 29-days of giving with knee pain so bad it hurt me to walk, and I had low energy from a bout of ‘mono’. I have finished this 29-days of giving being able to swim, bike, and run without knee pain, and my energy levels and mono symptoms are also abating. Could it just be coincidence that they got better after I completed the prescription of 29-days of giving, well yes, but I can’t think of a more fun and rewarding prescription to take, you just can’t go wrong with it, even if it doesn’t help you, it will help other people, and in helping other people you cannot help but feel better about things. The hardest thing about the 29 days was taking the time to blog about it. I shall certainly be carrying on with the giving, just not with the blogging.
