Let The Journey Begin--Day 1

After reading 29 Gifts a few days ago, in one sitting, I have contemplated a great deal what I wanted to do for my first gift. While I had several ideas, one just kept creeping into my mind, and I decided that must be what I am supposed to do. My boss at work, I will call her "J," has always been very supportive and encouraging to me. During my illness, she frequently called to check on me, sent me cards and flowers, and listened to me ramble on about myself and my illness countless times. While in her employ, she has always went out of her way to mentor me and encouraged me to reach my personal goals. In the 6+ years I have worked for her, she has frequently talked to me about going back to nursing school. She tells me that I will be an awesome nurse, that I can do it and that she would love for me to remain a part of her team when I am finished. So last Summer, I applied for school after being out for many years. While I have wanted to go back for several years, her encouragment and belief in me was the nudge I needed to do it. She has been flexible with my work schedule to allow me time to go to school, do homework and be with my family.

So for my 1st gift, I felt I should send her a hand written note detailing what her friendship and guidance has meant to me. As an RN herself with many years of experience, I value her and her support more than she knows. She has a team of over 80 employees and she genuinely cares for each and every one of us. I will give her my letter tomorrow and hope she is able to see just how much she means to me and many others that are fortunate to call her boss.
