Receiving
The biggest gift that I’ve received is a shift in my perception; how I view things and situations. It’s allowed me to find the good in everything. The day to day stuff has new meaning; waiting for a car to back up out of a parking spot, in turn opened a closer one to the store, a day of rain turned into a day of cuddling on the couch and watching Christmas movies.
Last night my kids were asking to stay up late to watch a show. We’d had a busy weekend and I thought they needed to get to bed, but I decided to let them stay up for their show. I went upstairs to read while they were watching TV which is a gift in itself! When I came back downstairs, they had picked up the living room and kitchen with out asking! That was a gift!
Last year, our family received Paper White bulbs as a gift. We all enjoyed watching them grow and flower. This week we remembered how much fun it was and I talked about finding some bulbs so we could make it a holiday tradition. This morning at my yoga class I was admiring a beautiful bowl of flowering paper whites at the home where we practice yoga. At the end of class my fellow yogi (and 29 gifter) handed me the bowl and said ‘enjoy’
I love the quote from Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher and it sums up my experience with giving:
"The wise man does not lay up his own treasures. The more he gives to others, the more he has for his own." Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher, 604 - 531 B.C.
