One of the women in my knitting group is fairly new. She moved here from across the country a couple of years ago, and has no family near except her own hubby and kids. She's renovating their yard one bit at a time, and recently pulled all of the ivy out of one shady corner. Last week she was asking what kind of plants she should get for a shade garden, and we all recommended hostas and ferns as well as spring bulbs. This morning while I was out in the garden, taking advantage of our late sunny days to get some yard work done, I dug up one of several young sword ferns that have popped up in my yard in the last couple of years from spores cast by the two huge ones in the front yard (we had two late, wet springs in recent years, which were terrible for tomatoes but great for ferns), and a clump of hardy cyclamen that are in bloom right now. I potted them up and took them to knitting today. She was very happy to receive them, and sent a picture showing where she'd planted them in her yard.
